Hours/Work Schedule: The College Business Hours are 8:30am - 4:30pm. This position may be required to work additional hours, as needed. Eligible for up to 2 days a week of remote work, after the probationary period.
Working Conditions: Typical indoor office work environment. Some travel is required to other campuses, educational sites, off campus meetings, and training workshops and seminars.
Physical Duties: Most of the job is sedentary. Basic Statement of Responsibilities

The Director of Accounting is responsible for the overall accounting and financial reporting functions of the college as well as the audits of all Unrestricted, Restricted, Plant, Housing, and Auxiliary Services funds/component units. The Director of Accounting is responsible for the timely and accurate receipt and disbursement of college funds. The Director of Accounting also assists the Vice-President of Finance and Administration with a wide variety of coordinating, follow-up, administrative, and accounting duties.
Essential Functions

  1. Direct all accounting operations for the College, including Unrestricted, Restricted, Plant, Auxiliary Services, and Housing funds.
  2. Oversee year-end closing procedures and maintain a comprehensive schedule of closing activities for College and Housing audits.
  3. Prepare year-end financial statements and supporting documentation for audits, including providing schedules and information to external auditors.
  4. Coordinate accounting functions for branch campuses, including budget preparation and performance reporting.
  5. Ensure adequate cash flow for disbursements and payroll; invest excess funds as appropriate.
  6. Monitor all College and Housing bank accounts and maintain strong relationships with banking partners.
  7. Supervise the Accountant - College & Foundation, responsible for bank reconciliations, journal entries, cash flow, and ACM Foundation accounting and audit.
  8. Supervise the Accountant - Grants & Housing, responsible for grant accounting and reporting, as well as Housing accounting, budgeting, reporting, and audit.
  9. Supervise the Budget Coordinator, who manages budget requests, compiles the annual College budget, and oversees ongoing monitoring. The Budget Coordinator supervises the Accountant - Budgeting, responsible for revenue and expense analysis and budget coordination.
  10. Prepare regular and special financial reports for the College and Housing as needed.
  11. Direct financial functions for capital projects, including file maintenance and coordination of contractor payments and reimbursement requests from State and County.
  12. Assist with financial operations for Auxiliary Enterprises, including Campus Store, Cafeteria, and Vending.
  13. Reconcile fixed asset values between the fixed asset system and the general ledger.
  14. Oversee and review the Maryland State Fiscal Year Financial Report (CC-4) and IPEDS annual financial submission.
  15. Develop and administer the Housing annual budget in compliance with MEDCO bond covenants, including approval of operating expenses, capital purchases, and maintenance costs.
  16. Serve as Housing liaison with the Cumberland Foundation Board for annual budget approval and interim financial reporting.
  17. Collaborate with the VP of Finance and Administration to approve Housing major repair and replacement expenditures and year-end statement presentations.
  18. Coordinate with Physical Plant, Facilities Planner, and Residence Life for Housing service contracts and purchases, including preventative maintenance and replacement cycles.
  19. Ensure compliance with Housing MEDCO bond covenants and manage fixed charges coverage ratio.
  20. Oversee preparation and submission of Housing periodic financial reports.
  21. In coordination with Resident Life, manage requests for use of Housing facilities by external entities.
  22. Perform internal audit functions, ensuring implementation and monitoring of internal controls for accurate financial reporting.
  23. Develop, recommend, and implement policies and procedures for all financial operations of the College.
  24. Provide general supervision of Accounting/Finance units in the absence of the Vice President of Finance and Administration.
  25. Assume additional responsibilities as requested by the Vice President of Finance and Administration.
Education, Experience, and Specialized Skills

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. A minimum of seven years of demonstrated progressive experience and responsibility in accounting or auditing, preferably higher education or governmental accounting.

Previous supervisory experience preferred. A CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  1. Proficient in a variety of software applications, with the ability to quickly learn and utilize the college's Ellucian Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and accounting system.
  2. Strong technical expertise in accounting principles (GAAP, GASB) and financial reporting, including the ability to prepare accurate financial statements from raw data.
  3. Comprehensive understanding of internal control design, implementation, and oversight.
  4. Advanced analytical skills to interpret complex financial data and support informed, data-driven decision-making.
  5. Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, with the ability to create and manipulate spreadsheets using formulas and functions.
  6. Exceptional leadership and interpersonal abilities, including effective written and verbal communication, problem-solving, and strategic thinking to build and motivate high-performing teams while ensuring compliance and driving financial success.
  7. Meticulous attention to detail to maintain accuracy in complex financial records and documentation.
  8. Strong mathematical proficiency, including operations such as multiplication, division, ratios, percentages, break-even analysis, and future value calculations.
  9. Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and perform under pressure.
  10. Commitment to high ethical standards in all work practices and professional interactions.
  11. Demonstrated eagerness to learn, adapt, and embrace new challenges.
  12. Excellent customer service orientation.
